Downlights vs Recessed Lights: What's the Difference?

They are particularly common in workplaces where even illumination across desks, circulation areas or larger floor spaces is important.

So, if somebody asks for recessed office lighting, the right answer could be a modular fitting or LED panel rather than a conventional downlight.

Fire Rated vs Standard Downlights

When installing recessed downlights, it's important to think beyond appearance.

Cutting an opening into certain fire-resisting ceilings can compromise the fire performance of the ceiling construction. Fire-rated downlights are designed and tested for use in specified fire-rated ceiling constructions, helping maintain the required level of fire resistance when correctly installed.

Products are commonly available with 30, 60 or 90-minute fire ratings, but that doesn't mean every fire-rated downlight is suitable for every ceiling. The fitting needs to be compatible with the particular ceiling construction and installation requirements.

For projects where fire resistance needs to be maintained, choosing suitable fire rated LED ceiling lights allows the lighting specification to account for both illumination and the required ceiling performance.

Choosing the Right Recessed Downlight
